Our English Lab puppies are lovable, family raised and ready for your home! The health of our dogs and the happiness of our puppy families are our highest priorities. One of the most important steps we take to ensure this is comprehensive health testing of our breeding dogs. Read below to learn what Health Testing is and what common Labrador conditions responsible breeders test for.
What is Health Testing?
Breed specific Health Testing is an important aspect of reputable Labrador breeders. It helps ensure the long-term health, well-being, and genetic soundness of puppies. Here’s an expanded explanation of the key health tests typically recommended for Labrador Retrievers—especially valuable if you’re looking for Fox Red Labrador Breeders.

What Health Tests Do We Perform as Fox Red Labrador Breeders?

1. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Testing
What it is: Hip Dysplasia (or CHD) is an “orthopedic condition that occurs when the hip joint forms incorrectly, leading to looseness or laxity. Over time, this laxity causes arthritis to develop, leading to pain and discomfort.” -https://www.vet.cornell.edu
Test used: Radiographic evaluations reviewed by OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or PennHIP.
Why it matters: While OFA and PennHIP screenings are considered the gold standard for evaluating hip and elbow abnormalities, there is currently no definitive genetic test for these conditions—unlike DNA-based disorders such as Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC), which can be identified through specific genetic testing.
“Although there is a genetic influence on hip dysplasia, the heritability of the trait is rather low. Many studies have shown that genetic variation accounts for only a modest fraction of the variation in hip scores, usually 15-40%. This means that some fraction of the variation in the quality of the hips is the result of non-genetic, or “environmental” influences.” – Carol Beuchat PhD https://www.instituteofcaninebiology.org

As such, responsible breeders must do the best they can to make informed decisions on their breeding plans through testing, whelping methods and raise puppies in as natural environment as possible and include education of puppy families with the best practices to help prevent dysplasia through proper nutrition, exercise and the delay of hormone altering procedures (such as spay/neuter) for their furr babies.
Genetic Testing for Labrador Breeders
2. EIC – Exercise-Induced Collapse
What it is: A genetic disorder causing affected dogs to collapse after intense exercise.
Test used: DNA test for the EIC gene mutation.
Why it matters: Carriers (one copy) can be bred to non-carriers to avoid affected puppies. Mating a carrier dog to a carrier, or an affected dog is putting the health of future puppies at risk.
3. CNM – Centronuclear Myopathy
What it is: A condition affecting muscle function, leading to weakness and poor coordination.
Test used: DNA test for the CNM gene.
Why it matters: Like EIC, breeding decisions should avoid producing affected puppies.
4. PRA – Progressive Retinal Atrophy
What it is: A degenerative eye disease that eventually causes blindness.
Test used: DNA panel testing (commonly included in Labrador-specific genetic panels).
Why it matters: PRA is inherited, and responsible breeding can eliminate it from bloodlines.
5. Dilute Gene Testing
What it is: This checks for the presence of the “d” allele responsible for dilute coat colors (like silver).
Why it matters: We test to avoid color dilution alopecia (CDA) and preserve breed standards.
Color dilution alopecia is a skin condition known for causing hair loss. This condition arises because of a hereditary structural defect causing an abnormal distribution of melatonin in the dog’s hair shafts. –https://www.hotlrc.com/silver
6. Eye Exams (Ophthalmologic Testing)
What it is: Screening for eye conditions like:
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Cataracts
Retinal Dysplasia
Test used: Annual exams by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist, often certified through CERF or OFA Eye Certification.
Why it matters: Many of these conditions can lead to blindness but can be managed if detected early and avoided through careful breeding.
